The Transition style is marked by a return to the straight line and the symmetrical forms. Rocaille is abandoned to make place again to decors inspired from Greek antiquity (neo-classic style). This symmetry preserves however the elegance of the style Louis XV, by recovering some of its basic decors (rosettes, garlands, ribbons and pearls). The chests of drawers lose their bent belly. Gildings and ornamentations are very much used but are mainly used to soften the straight lines.
The piece of furniture most representative of this style is doubtless the writing desk, which experiences an unprecedented success. Concerning the seats, they preserve the same general pace, but have a rectified line of the feet. New models appear, like the armchair in Artois. The new seats are characterized by a back in the shape of medallion decorated with carved flowers and by legs with fine grooves.
