The antique style of Louis XIII followed the French renaissance but is also inspired by Flemish or Spanish influences. The search for comfort takes precedence over an excessive decoration. The principal contribution of the style Louis XIII is the turned wood decor which comes to replace the sculptured ornaments of the renaissance era. Many alternatives meet: turnings with lay, baluster or chain. The method of assembly in use is called "angle tièdre abattu", which replaces the mortises.
The seats with arm are of very caracteristic form and take the name of armchairs. They are stuffed and, put aside turnings, count only few decorations. The piece of furniture in vogue at that time is also the cabinet (Italian, Flemish, Spanish or German). Lastly, the fabrics are of increasing importance in the trimming of the seats, beds or walls.
