Régence Antique Furniture

1715 - 1723 A. D.

Following the rigor of Louis XIV’s reign, one attends a loosening of moral standards, which is translated in furniture making by a domination of imagination and elegance. The forms are curved, more refined parts. The most employed decors are the palmette, the face of woman, and especially the catch, ornamentation in the shape of female chest in relief, inspired by the Watteau painter. Moreover, one meets symbols of the everyday life (instruments of hunting or music) or love (cherubs, crowns of roses).

The seats see their form changing. Women become important in the definition of the new pieces of furniture. The arm-rests are put in recess to enable them to seat with their dresses with panniers. The feet remain cambered. The spacers H or X-shaped are preserved. Among the new pieces of furniture, we should mention the “Bergères” (provided with a cushion, with full arm-rests), the “tomb" chest of drawers or the “crossbow" commode.
